Colbert's take on SAHDs

Just found this and couldn't stop laughing. If we can't laugh at ourselves, who can we.

Less Than Thrilled Wife

so I tell my wife when she got home that I started a blog. Her reaction? "Oh, good...another project you won't follow up on!" Now I wasn't expecting back-flips, but a little support would be nice. Maybe it is her twisted way of supproting me. Reverse Psycology maybe. Never can tell with her. and she might be a little right, seeing as how my antique business (ala Cash in the Attic) has generated a whopping $51.14 and My "I'll ebay for you!" ad in the paper earned me exactly zero responses.

But I think she is missing the point. Like I said before this blog is not to just rant, but to offer information for other stay at home dads. And the point of this edition is that if you don't have projects to keep you busy each day, you will go insane. Yes, most of the day is taken up by the kids, housework and errands that need done, but if you don't make some "Me Time" you're well on the way to -insert favorite psychiatric hospital here.

One idea I have culled from the net is "start a play group." The man Who Would Be Dad by Hogan Hilling says: “As much as I wanted to be part of the group and the moms wanted to accept the idea of having a father in the group, the fact that I was a father and they were moms made things a little uneasy for everyone in the beginning. Neither the moms nor I knew what to say or how to act toward each other, which got all of us started on the wrong foot. After a while, I stopped making an issue of the fact that I was the only dad in the play group and just concentrated on having fun and being a parent. Then I became more comfortable, less inhibited. Eventually, my perseverance and new attitude paid off.”
If I meet stay at home parents every day for play dates, how many of them do you think will be guys? What would my wife say about the fact that I spend all that time with a bunch of moms, some single? NEXT

Start an at home business: Trying that one...guess fifty bucks is better than nothing. NEXT

Start a blog: I'll show my wife this one and I won't even say "I told you it was a good idea"!

Welcome

Dear Visitors,
Welcome to the stay at home dads blog. This being the first entry, I will keep it short. Being a SAHD since my daughter was born has been the most rewarding and challenging experience. I saw a report that there were only 160,000 of us, and while searching the internet for information I found there really is very few resources. My first search found stupid jokes about dads being incapable of properly caring for children and daily chores (sniffing clothes and running them through the dryer, putting down drop cloths and letting the kids go naked). Just look at publications like american baby ("MOM TO MOM. WOMAN TO WOMAN."), babytalk ("STRAIGHT TALK FOR NEW MOMS"), and Parenting (What really matters to moms). The articles in these magazines are really good and i admit I read them regularly, but I do have to mentally change the wording of most articles to dad or him/his. And sometimes I have to put the book down out of fustration. My "Top Ten Stress Relief Tips" don't include bubble baths, cross stiching, or shopping, and my idea of a "Dream Getaway" is Wrigley Field bleachers with a beer, not wine tasting in Napa Valley. This is already longer than I thought it would be, and the baby just woke up and is starting to entice me into a game of peek-a-boo. My hopes for the future are being a good source of information for other SAHDs and a place to vent once in a while. Later, athomedaddy
